What are Helly Hansen fleece made from?

Helly Hansen remains at the forefront of performance technology and our fleece is no exception. Each fleece’s materials have been carefully selected to equip its wearer with what they need to excel, be it windproof, lightweight, packable or otherwise.

Our most commonly used material is polyester however we also incorporate wool, polyamide and elastane too. You’ll find most of our mid-weight fleece are made from 100% recycled polyester, with the lighter and heavy-weight fleece blended for the optimal mix. 

We also use Polartec fleece fabrics. Polartec are renowned globally  for their innovation and quality. Filter by Polartec or look out for the Polartec® symbol in the product details if you’re specifically looking for a Polartec fleece.

What weight of fleece do I need?

From lightweight layers for spring hiking to heavy-duty options for the coldest ski days, our fleece comes in a range of thicknesses and weights.

<200gsm: Lightweight, performance fleece. Ideal for more active days - such as trail running or more challenging climbs - and layering with other jumpers or jackets. You may see this fleece referred to as microfleece due to its thinner fibres.
200-300gsm: Good all-round fleece that provides you with warmth, but is not too thick. This is a favourite weight for many hikers.
>300gsm: For the coldest days. Our warmest fleece are over 500gsm and will keep you warm in the harshest of conditions and climates.

*g or gsm are interchangeable in the context of fleece weight and refer to grams per square metre. Although weight will often correlate with thickness, this is not always the case as it depends on the density of the material used.

Should I size up for a fleece?

If you’d like to layer your fleece over other layers, sizing up is a good option. Generally speaking, however, you will be the same size in a fleece as you are in a shirt or jumper. Please refer to our size guide for more information.

Is fleece easy to care for?

We have designed our men’s fleece to endure an active lifestyle and to be a trusted companion for many years. We expect them to be packed tightly into a bag, pulled on at a moment's notice, worn on wet and muddy days, and washed repeatedly.

While your fleece doesn’t need any special treatment, you should:

• Always follow the care label on the product
• Spot clean and stains or particularly dirty patches before washing
• Wash similar colours together, especially new clothing.
• Air dry wherever possible, or if you’re force to use a tumble-dryer, no/ low heat is essential
• Do not dry clean
