  • THOMAS COVILLE

    PROFESSIONAL OFFSHORE SOLO SAILOR

    La Trinité Sure Mer, France

Thomas Coville is not just a skilled sailor, he is one of the most successful solo sailors of all time. He has notable finishes in the world’s most competitive offshore races, including the Mini Transat 6.50, the Solitaire du Figaro, the Admiral’s Cup, America’s Cup, Route du Rhum, The Transat, the Vendée Globe, and the Volvo Ocean Race. Thomas Coville has made a career of breaking records and pushing limits. In 2016, Coville achieved what was thought to be impossible, he sailed around the world solo on a multihull in under 50 days! Imagine sailing across six oceans in seven weeks…alone! Coville accomplished this incredible feat only a few months after breaking the North-Atlantic crossing record. Again, he did it all solo! Thomas’ love of sailing was born in his early years on the North coast of the French region Bretagne. From his first sailing lesson to his latest journey around the world, Thomas has employed hard work and persistence to achieve his lofty goals. His ambitions grew alongside skills and, a few years after winning the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean race onboard Groupama, Thomas decided to focus his efforts on his own campaign. This led Coville to his next step, being the first man to sail around the world solo in less than 50 days. But, he didn’t stop there. Always eager to learn more and gain more speed on the water, Thomas is now building a new trimaran – not only to sail, but also to fly! Stay tuned – there is a new and thrilling chapter ahead! During his solo sailing expeditions, Thomas works, eats, and sleeps in Helly Hansen products, 24/7. His feedback is invaluable to the development and improvement of our professional-grade sailing gear. The latest addition to the collection is the HP Racing Midlayer Jacket which uses our newest Lifaloft™ technology to make his sailing gear not only lighter, but also warmer.

  • SARAH DOUGLAS

    LASER RADIAL SAILOR

    Canada

Born in Burlington, Ontario, Sarah started sailing at the age of 7 on the island of Barbados. Starting in the Optimist, she competed in the North American and World Championships before the age of 15. After outgrowing the boat, Sarah returned to Canada and transitioned into the Laser Radial class. From there, she quickly became one of the top youth sailors in Canada. In 2010, an opportunity was presented to qualify for Canada and represent the country at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. After coming second at the 2010 Youth Nationals, Sarah lost the love of competing and decided to coach youth athletes at Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club for two summers. By 2014, her dream to compete at the Olympics was awoken by a Canadian medalist who inspired Sarah to get back into the game and pursue her goal of winning an Olympic medal. After completing a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management at the University of Guelph in 2017, Sarah is back to sailing full time. Today she is ranked one of the best Laser Radial sailors in the world! Winning Gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru has only pushed her forward towards her goal of competing at the Olympics in Tokyo.

  • MARCUS CASTON

    BIG MOUNTAIN SKIER

    Salt Lake City, UTAH, USA

Marcus Caston has been an icon in the skiing world for over a decade. With a style that evokes memories of skiing’s roots, he is known for playful hop turns and clean arcs in just about any snow condition. Having grown up skiing on the Snowbird Race team, his education in powder skiing and big mountain lines came hand in hand with learning how to carve a ski. Ski photography led him to his first Warren Miller trip, and he has been featured in eight of the films since. His summers are spent inspiring skiing’s next generation in Mt. Hood. On a quest to find the perfect turn, he hunts for the unique coalescence of light, terrain, and snow. The “Return of the Turn” web series he produces and stars in follows him on this journey, finding impeccable turns in locations that range from the Swiss Alps to your local town hill. You can find Marcus skiing around the Wasatch. His skiing is all about rhythm and flow, and if you’re not sure what that looks like, take a few tram laps at Snowbird and you’ll probably find out. • ERIN MIELZYNSKI

    CANADIAN OLYMPIC ALPINE SKIER

    Thornbury, Ontario

Erin grew up in a small town in Canada beginning to ski on snow and water at the age of two. Erin excelled more quickly in water skiing in slalom, tricking and jumping, and at the age of 16 she headed to the Junior Worlds where she placed 2nd in the jump event. However, she had fallen in love with the mountains, so when she made the Canadian National Alpine team in 2008 she made a choice to focus her efforts on alpine skiing and the Olympics. Now Erin has 3 Olympic Games under her belt, and she is preparing for a new Olympic cycle and the upcoming World Championships. Erin has stood on the podium 3 times at the World Cup level, becoming the first Canadian woman in 41 years to win a World Cup slalom race. Specializing in the technical events, Erin trains and races in many parts of the world, chasing winter and racing on the World Cup circuit. Last year, after a mistake in the first run she posted the 3rd fastest second run at the Olympics, putting her in 11th overall; and in Zagreb, Croatia she posted the fastest time of the second run, proving that she is a podium contender at the World Cup Level. Erin uses her summer training to seek new adventures; summiting peaks to reach target heart rates, planning bike routes to alleviate the monotony of training and trying new activities for different training modalities whether that includes paddle boarding, surfing, trail running, etc. In her down time, she loves to get outside and explore. Nature is her way to unwind, shut off and become more present. Erin loves to look down and see that her phone has no service, whether that is at the top of a mountain or in an off-grid cabin. An animal and nature lover to the core, Erin has to continually find the balance between intensely competing and slowing down to enjoy where the journey takes her. Whether it is reading beside a river or running up a hill at max heart rate, she has to find a way to get outside and breathe the fresh air.

  • KAYLIN RICHARDSON

    OLYMPIAN & BIG MOUNTAIN SKIER

    Parl City, Utah, USA

Kaylin’s journey as a skier continues to evolve, and she has loved every turn and transition. She has found that her appreciation for the mountains deepens with each reinvention. A Minnesota native, Kaylin discovered it only takes small hills to support big aspirations. At the age of 15, she made the US Ski Team; over the following ten years she brought her unique outlook and competitive spirit to the World Cup circuit. Shortly after her second Olympic Games, Kaylin chose to listen to her longtime call of the wild. Although this decision surprised many people, Kaylin moved forward with purpose. Eyes set on far off peaks, she went looking for mountain adventure. Her first backcountry experience left an indelible mark. The peace of the ascent coupled with the exhilaration of the descent was the combination that Kaylin didn’t know she had been missing in her life. Thanks to a lot of hustle and a little luck, Kaylin carved out a niche for herself in the big mountain scene. The subsequent adventures, partnerships, and friendships have shaped her life, and led her to landing in Utah. When she isn’t shooting, filming, or writing, Kaylin has the privilege to do what she loves most of all - igniting the passion for skiing in others. Through the “Ski With a Champion” program Kaylin gets to show skiers around Deer Valley Resort while elevating their ability along the way. These interactions cause her to fall in love with skiing over and over again through her guests' experiences. Building off this, Kaylin hopes to help create new avenues and outlets to share the joy of the mountains with groups of people that have not yet had this life-affirming opportunity, on skis or otherwise. Kaylin’s most recent transformation is perhaps the most profound of all. In June 2020, Kaylin gave birth to her daughter, Hollynd. She relays that it is an adventure unlike any other, and is only getting better. Kaylin has no goals for Holly other than exposing her to the outdoors and nurturing whatever interests speak to her little heart. Certainly, the introduction of teeny skis and boots are in the future, but whether they go downhill are Holly’s decision. Her mama will be there, whatever she chooses… Kaylin has lived the lives of many skiers: Midwest weekend warrior, elite racer, backcountry seeker, big mountain sender, featured film star, expert ski host, industry maven, and perhaps, even supportive ski mom... time will tell! The most exciting part of these transitions is that Kaylin discovered each evolution was not a redefinition of her as a person. Rather, it was (and is) an expansion. Kaylin is the byproduct of a life of trust; trust that the mountains are big enough for all of her, and more. Kaylin is a stronger skier than ever, and she has at least a few more reinventions ahead. But one belief will remain her compass: the mountains are her sacred place to learn, to grow, and to connect.

  • SIMON HILLIS

    FREE SKIER

    Rossland, BC

Great things come in small packages. Born in Bali, Indonesia, Simon moved to Rossland with his family at the age of three. By the end of his first season on skis, the pint-sized Simon had savvy locals talking about his picture-perfect technique and his relentless hunger to be on his skis all day, every day. Simon spent the next three years dragging his dad around the mountain while also dominating in the Nancy Greene Ski League, but steep trees and big air have always been his passion. During the 09/10 ski season – at the ripe old age of seven – Simon was finally old enough to enter the Junior freeski ranks. He became Red Mountain’s youngest ever sponsored team athlete and made a powerful first impression on the Junior Freeskiing circuit, competing against kids who were four years older. In his debut season and his very first event, Simon finished third at the Canadian Junior Championships at Red Mountain in Rossland, BC. In 2013, Simon won his first North American Overall Jr Freeski Championship in the under 12 category, as well as the overall championship again in 2016 in the 12-14 category. Simon has also had multiple magazine features, including a front cover of Ski Magazine in 2010 and a six page article in the winter 2017 SBC Skier magazine. In 2018, at the ripe old age of 15, he was presented the opportunity to film with Warren Miller.

Skiing. Such a funny thing we do. We strap wooden planks to our feet and point them down the mountain just for the pure joy and thrill of going fast and flying through cold white fluff. We let crisp frigid air whip our bodies for hours in subzero temps, we train and push ourselves to become better skiers and to go further than we ever thought we could. We allow ourselves to become completely miserable, letting our toes become completely frostbitten, turn white, and then poke our nails, hoping they eventually fall off. We share hot cocoa with friends and push our partners and ski buddies to become the best version of themselves. We climb bigger and more challenging mountains and ski gnarlier lines. We throw ourselves off of bigger cliffs and try to go faster and bigger than we did the day before. Why? Because it's skiing. And we love it. And isn't that what it's all about? Ski fast, smile big. *Profile image by Stephen Shelesky, gallery images by Cam Mcleod + Stephen Shelesky

Roger had the good fortune of growing up in Denver, Colorado. He grew up skiing and scrambling up the high peaks of the Rockies, fueling his deep passion for being in the mountains. Towards the end of high school, he stumbled into a commercial salmon fishing job in Alaska that turned into a 20-year-career. Eventually, he became a highlighted Captain of the F/V Saga on the first season of the Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel. His attraction to vertical adventure in adverse conditions, especially winter, replaced the harsh and burly conditions that were dealt to him when he was working in the Bering Sea. He lives in Seattle, Washington with his wife, Merridy and daughter, Maya. Located right at the gateway to the huge Cascade Mountain Range, he and his family have access to multiple lifetimes of climbing, skiing and kitesurfing adventures. In the Spring of 2011, Roger and four friends were caught off-guard skiing in the backcountry. They were swept down the mountain in an avalanche, resulting in both of his lower legs being destroyed. Three and a half months in a wheelchair and three surgeries later, Roger was blessed with an incredibly fast recovery, thanks to an amazing surgeon and physical therapy team. He was back on skis, climbing, running, and kitesurfing 10 months later, nearly as strong as before the avalanche. He feels humbly blessed to have many first ascents and descents throughout Alaska, Canada, U.S., and Mexico, and attributes any of his successes in the mountains to patience, a thirst for suffering, and the relationships with his family and friends.

    HELI SKIING OPERATION

    Cordova, Alaska, USA

Founded in 1998 by professional skier couple Kevin and Jessica Quinn, Points North Heli has been an integral part of the North American and broader international ski community for over two decades. With an exemplary safety record, an elite crew of Professionals, and a fleet of A-Star helicopters, they've made ski dreams a reality across 2,000 square miles of pristine alpine terrain year after year. Well known as a premier operator for pro athletes and leading media companies such as Warren Miller, they also insist you certainly don't have to be a "professional" to experience the grandeur of heli-skiing in Alaska with terrain to suit all abilities. In addition to operating PNH, Kevin has served as President of the US Heli Ski Association since 2013. No successful partnership would be complete without an equally capable and talented better half, with Jessica directing and coordinating a team of 28 pilots and operational support crew and founding the Alaskan Ladies Big Mountain Free-skiing camp. PNH is also a proud VÖLKL Ski partner, with both Kevin and Jessica longtime Squaw Valley ambassadors with multiple media accolades and filmography appearances throughout their careers.
