Puffer, padded, quilted or down jackets

While often used interchangeably, there is a difference between puffer/ padded and down jackets. At Helly, our range includes:

• Down jackets - a type of puffer jacket which uses down feathers - a popular thermal insulator. It gives a plush, padded effect.
• Padded/ puffer jackets - used interchangeably to describe a jacket that has insulation and as such may appear “puffy”. The insulation could be down, but it could be a synthetic or other material too.
• Quilted jackets- used to describe a padded jacket with diamond-shaped padding, as opposed to the horizontal stitching of a “traditional” puffer jacket. Can be either down or non-down insulated.

Whether you choose a down or non-down padded jacket is primarily personal preference. Each of our puffer jackets have slightly different qualities and care requirements, but all successfully serve the same core purpose of keeping you warm and comfortable.

Insulation and puffer jacket weights

Our women’s puffers come in a range of weights to suit different conditions and personal preference:

• 200-500g: Our lightweight puffers are incredibly popular as packaway layers since they can be compressed down in a backpack or suitcase. They provide warmth and comfort, but are not bulky and can be used as a midlayer as well as outerwear. These are great for setting out in the early morning and packing away as the day heats up.
• 501 - 1000g: These jackets will keep you warm and comfortable in a wide variety of situations. They are at home on a ski slope, or in the city on a cold winter day. We recommend this weight if you are looking for a warm, allround jacket.
• >1000g: A true heavyweight for the coldest conditions. These jackets will keep you snug in the harshest of alpine climates.
