Cold-weather hiking, or for those who feel the cold
- Opt for a waterproof, breathable jacket with down or synthetic insulation
- Many of our winter hiking jackets can also double up as ski jackets
Spring/ summer hiking
- A lightweight layer with a high waterproof and breathability rating (20K*/20K**) - Look for Helly Tech® Professional & Helly Tech® Performance ratings
- If you are looking for a jacket to wear all round, we recommend choosing this combination as you can layer beneath it for the winter, without carrying additional insulation in the summer months
Emergency rain coat for short usage
- Choose a jacket which can be compressed down into a small space
- If you only intend to use it for short bursts you can opt for a lower breathability and waterproof rating, for example 5K*/5K**. Look for Helly Tech® Protection.
*Waterproof rating of 5K will withstand 5000 mm or rain, while 20K will withstand 20,000mmm
**Breathability rating of 5K equates to 5000m of vapour passing out of the jacket over a 24 hour period. 20K similarly would allow 20,000mm in a 24 hour period.
