There are four key factors to consider when choosing a hiking jacket, as well as several elements that come down to personal preference:
- Waterproof
If you intend to use your jacket as an outer layer, we recommend choosing an option which is waterproof. Waterproof ratings start from 5K (5000mm of rain) up to 20K+ (20000 mm of rain). If you’re looking for an all round jacket that can protect you no matter what weather comes your way, all day long, opt for a 20K+ rating or Helly Tech® Professional.
- Breathable
Often overlooked but critical for comfort is breathability. This will prevent you from getting too hot on tough climbs or when moving at pace. For light hikes you could opt for a 5K rated jacket however if you are regularly summiting mountains or find you get very warm, a 20K rated jacket would be preferable. - Windproof
While most waterproof jackets are windproof, not all are. It is worth checking if a jacket is windproof, particularly if you know that it has a higher breathability rating.
- Insulated
There are two main routes for hiking jacket insulation:

- Choosing a thinner or non-insulated jacket and layer beneath it - provides more flexibility for all year round wear
